If you’ve ever sent a file to a print shop and gotten back something that looked nothing like what you designed — colors off, washed out, or just plain wrong — there’s a good chance your color mode had something to do with it. And if your designer or software was working in Lab color, that’s a serious problem.
Let’s break it down in plain English, no design degree required.
What Even Is Lab Color?
Lab color (technically called CIE L*a*b*) is a color model developed by an international standards organization to describe every color the human eye can see. That sounds impressive, and mathematically it is. Lab separates lightness (L) from color information (a = green-to-red, b = blue-to-yellow), which makes it a powerful tool for color science, image correction, and software calculations happening behind the scenes.
Photoshop uses Lab color internally for certain adjustments. Color scientists use it to measure color accuracy. High-end retouchers sometimes work in it for specific edits.
But here’s the thing — Lab color was never designed to be a print delivery format. And sending a Lab file to a printer is like giving a chef a recipe written in Kelvin temperatures instead of Fahrenheit. Technically it’s information. Practically, it’s chaos.
The Core Problem: Printers Don’t Speak Lab
Commercial printing presses — whether offset or digital — operate in CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). That’s the four-ink system that puts ink on paper. Every color you see on a printed flyer, business card, or banner is built from those four values.
Lab color exists in a completely different mathematical space. When you send a Lab file to a printer’s RIP (Raster Image Processor — the software that converts your file into printable output), one of two things happens:
- The software tries to convert Lab to CMYK automatically — and that conversion is done by the RIP using its own built-in color profiles, which may not match your screen, your expectations, or the paper stock being used. You have zero control over the result.
- The software doesn’t handle it properly — and you get unpredictable, shifted colors, flat output, or outright errors.
Neither outcome is good when you’re paying for same-day flyers and need them to look right.
Lab Colors Can Go Way Outside Printable Range
Lab’s color space is huge — intentionally so. It encompasses colors that simply cannot be physically reproduced with ink on paper. These are called out-of-gamut colors, and they’re one of the biggest traps for designers working in Lab.
A color can look vivid and saturated on your screen in Lab mode but fall completely outside what CMYK can achieve. When that gets forced into print, the color gets clipped or shifted — meaning you lose vibrancy, saturation, or accuracy. That electric blue or neon green you designed? It might print as a muddy, muted version of itself.
In CMYK, you know you’re working within printable range. What you see is much closer to what you get.
The Conversion Problem Is Real
Even if the Lab-to-CMYK conversion goes smoothly, you still have a problem: which CMYK profile is being used?
Different paper stocks, different presses, and different print environments all use different ICC profiles. A coated paper profile (like US Web Coated SWOP) produces different CMYK values than an uncoated paper profile. If the RIP applies the wrong profile to your Lab file, your colors shift — and you had no say in it.
When you submit a file already converted to CMYK with the correct profile for the job, you’re in control. When you submit Lab, you’re hoping the printer’s software makes the right call. That’s a gamble you don’t need to take.
What Should You Use Instead?
For print files, the answer is almost always CMYK. Here’s a quick cheat sheet:
CMYK — Use this for virtually all commercial printing: flyers, business cards, postcards, brochures, banners, stickers, and anything that will be physically printed on a press.
RGB — Use this for digital designs only: social media graphics, websites, digital ads, and email. Note: If you submit an RGB file for print, a good print shop will convert it — but you’re still rolling the dice on how that conversion lands.
Spot Colors (Pantone/PMS) — Use these when exact color matching is critical, like a brand logo that must always be the exact same shade. Spot colors are mixed inks, not built from CMYK dots, so they’re the most accurate option for brand consistency.
Lab — Use this only for color science work, internal software calculations, or specific image editing tasks. Never send it as a final print file.
File Setup Tips for Clean Printing

- Color mode: CMYK, not RGB, not Lab
- Resolution: 300 DPI minimum for photos and raster images
- Bleed: Add 0.125″ (⅛ inch) bleed on all sides if your design goes edge to edge
- Fonts: Outline your fonts, or embed them
- File format: PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 are the gold standards; high-res PDF is fine for most jobs
- Black text: Use true black (C:0 M:0 Y:0 K:100), not rich black, for body copy
